Agenda 2020: the best design fairs to see
by Maria Chiara Antonini

For design and furniture lovers the beginning of the year is always full of events not to be missed. Since January there are always many fairs dedicated to the interior and decorating world in which all the design companies participate with new collections, often in limited editions or as worldwide preview. So which are the 2020 design fairs not to be missed? Here is our selection.

Imm Cologne, from 13 to 19 January

The first fair to open its doors in January is in Cologne. It is called “Imm Cologne, The interior business event” and everyone goes: from companies that produce design furnishings to creative studios, famous and emerging ones. For the 2020 edition there will be 1200 exhibitors from 50 countries, and two are the events not to be missed during this German fair. The first is called Das Haus, it is a large space inside one of the pavilions of the fair, dedicated every year to a different designer studio, which presents its ideal home (das haus in Germany). For the 2020 edition the special guest is the Spanish studio MUT from Valencia. Another exhibition not to be missed is the one dedicated to emerging designers in the section called Pure Talents Contest: a precious chance to meet the most interesting upcoming designers.

Maison & Objet in Paris, from 17 to 21 January

After Cologne, the second appointment not to be missed among the 2020 design fairs is in Paris: it’s called Maison&Objet. The fair is very big, and in its many pavilions you can admire all the new products in the world of furniture, hospitality and kitchen. There are also other more specific pavilions, such as: Smart Gift, Kids & Family, Fashion & Accessories for buyers and distributors in these sectors. At every edition of the French fair a “Designer of the Year” is nominated, and for the 2020 edition the spotlight will all be on Michael Anastassiades, a Cyprian designer who lives in London, famous for his lamps produced by Flos. This designer will have a whole stand, with the best of his collections, including cult pieces and new products. Another news of 2020 edition is the digital platform MOM (acronym for Maison & Objet and More) where you can see online all the novelties that will be presented at M&O 2020.

Stockholm Design Week, from 3 to 9 February

Stockholm, which deserves a trip if you have never visited it, during the first week of February becomes the hottest Scandinavian capital for design lovers, despite the prohibitive temperatures of the Swedish Winter. The fair has only two pavilions, with all the best of Scandinavian design studios: you can easily visit in one day, and it is an opportunity to discover all those brands that furnish the houses with the best of the Nordic style that has now conquered the world. After visiting the fair, you can enjoy the many events that are organized in the centre of Stockholm. Showrooms, clubs, shops and restaurants become exceptional locations to meet the designers in person and to discover all the design novelties 2020, sipping a cocktail in an informal and fun atmosphere.

Ambiente in Frankfurt, from 7 to 11 February

In the race against time to see all the best of 2020 design and furniture, the last stop that cannot be skipped is in Frankfurt, with the fair called Ambiente. With its 300 thousand square meters of surface and more than 4400 exhibitors, it is considered the world’s leading consumer goods fair. Each year, within the three exhibition areas called Dining, Living and Giving, you can see the biggest range of products in these sectors. Among the novelties of Ambiente 2020 not to be missed there is the first edition of the exhibition called “Focus on Design”, with 5 Brazilian design studios that will present their collections. Last but not least, two interesting prizes: the “Plagiarius”, which is the negative award assigned to those who copy the products, and the “Tableware International Awards of Excellence”, which rewards the most beautiful and interesting glass and porcelain items.
